Internet Security Systems Security Brief
July 22, 2002

Remote Compromise and Denial of Service Vulnerability in PHP

Synopsis:

ISS X-Force has learned of a vulnerability in two versions of PHP. PHP
is a popular server-side scripting language that is used primarily in
Apache Web server environments and is supported by all major Web servers
and operating systems. It has been reported that only certain platforms
running PHP are vulnerable, but this has not yet been verified. At the
time of publication, there is no widespread circulation of an exploit
for this vulnerability.

Impact:

Netcraft reports that as of June 2002, there are over 23.1 million
active Apache installations, which account for 60% of the Web sites
surveyed. Secure Space reports that PHP is the most popular Apache
module available, with over 2.12 million active installations. This
vulnerability can be exploited by both local and remote users, including
those behind packet filters or firewalls.

Affected Versions:

PHP version 4.2.0
PHP version 4.2.1
